Clone Ubuntu to WSL
I’m setting up a new Win 10 laptop and am planning on installing WSL FCU (Windows Subsystem for Linux Fall Creators Update) after its released tomorrow.
My initial thoughts are to install 16.04 dual boot by shrinking the 512 GB SSD partition by 40 GB for Ubuntu dual boot. Then restore my full system backup of all of Ubuntu excluding /tmp, /proc, /sys, etc to the dual boot partition.
Then install Ubuntu from Windows Store and copy my full system backup from dual boot partion to WSL’s directory (
/mnt/c/blah/lx.../blah (can’t remember exact syntax)). I’ll be keeping all the GUI goodies like Conky, YAD, etc in hopes I can make them work with
VcXsrv. I’ll run
rm-kernels to purge the 20-odd Linux kernels which aren’t needed under WSL and frankly, would just be confusing to have within WSL.
Because I’ve only read a little bit about WSL and FCU is there a better way of cloning native Ubuntu over to WSL? I’ve googled this and can’t find a link but perhaps there is an article somewhere on how to do it? Or will I have to just do things the hard way one package by one from scratch?
WSL has been around for a year so hopefully someone has cloned Ubuntu to it before.
